The Garbage Garage Wins EPA Award

The Garbage Garage Education Center was presented with an award from the Environmental Protection Agency. Steve Burkett, Director of the Solid and Hazardous Waste Program for the Region 8 office of the EPA, presented the Environmental Achievement Award at a Board of County Commissioners' Administrative Matters meeting.

Burkett noted that the Garbage Garage was unique among all the nominations they received from the six states covered by Region 8.

"As far as I know, the Garbage Garage is one of only a few education centers nationwide devoted exclusively and extensively to waste education," said Cheryl Kolus, the Solid Waste Department's environmental educator. She and coworker Rose Watson, education center attendant, accepted the award on behalf of the department. "We are thrilled to be recognized by the EPA for our achievements, and invite everyone to come visit the Garbage Garage to see for themselves why it won this award."

The Garbage Garage is full of fun and interactive displays about reducing, reusing, and recycling; how landfills work; and how to stay safe around household hazardous wastes. Thousands of visitors, from preschoolers to senior citizens, have been impressed by the towering "mountain of trash" that first greets them at the center, and have walked away with new knowledge about garbage and what to do with it.
