Larimer County Offices, Courts, District Attorney, and Landfill are closed on May 29, 2017 in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday. Critical services at Larimer County are not disrupted by closures.
The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment has announced that the recipient of the third annual Joseph Jabaily Public Health Hero Award is Jane Higgins, MD, a physician at CSU's Hartshorn Health Service. Higgins was one of several nominations for the award and received unanimous approval by the County Board of Health in May.
The Jabaily award was created by the Larimer County Board of Health in honor and in memory of Dr. Joseph Jabaily, a Loveland neurologist, community activist, volunteer and member of many boards in the county who died tragically after an accident in a charity bicycle race in summer of 2004.
This award honors those who have contributed in an extraordinary way to public health in Larimer County," said Dr. Adrienne LeBailly, director of the department of health and environment. "Dr. Higgins exemplifies that sprit through her years of service and commitment to the health of CSU students, and to the larger Larimer County community."
Higgins has been involved in public health activities in Larimer County for over 20 years. Board Certified in Family Medicine, Higgins began her work at CSU's Hartshorn Health Service in 1987. Over the years at Hartshorn, Higgins not only has served as a trusted physician for CSU students, but has also served as department head of the Medical Clinic and as public health and infection control physician for the university, a title she still holds. Through this work she leads efforts to track sources of disease outbreaks on campus; works with CSU administration and Larimer County public health officials in establishing disease-prevention policies, such as immunization requirements; creates disease control policies for those who might be exposed to infections; coordinates CSU's tuberculosis control program; and advises CSU medical staff on infectious diseases on campus, including meningitis, measles, pertussis, mumps, chickenpox, influenza, etc.
