Data Source: Larimer County Human Services - Children, Youth, & Family Division

In Larimer County, males and females were equally likely to be reported as victims of child abuse from 2003 through 2006. Beginning in 2007, and continuing into 2008, more males were reported as victims of child abuse (53%) and most child abuse reports (37%) were for victims between the ages of 6 to 12 years old, closely followed by victims under 5 years (33%).What this chart shows: Victims of Infant Abuse (Age <1) Initial Reports & Substantiated Cases - Larimer County, 2004-2008

Data Source: Larimer County Human Services - Children, Youth, & Family Division
What these data tell us:
The number of victims in initial reports of infant abuse increased from 355 cases in 2004 to 713 cases in 2008. The number of victims in substantiated reports of infant abuse also increased from 98 in 2004 to 124 substantiated reports in 2008.Better training among mandatory reporters (i.e., teachers, doctors, nurses) on what to look for may have contributed to the increase of abuse reports between 2004 and 2008. For example, if doctors know what symptoms to look for, they can know when to test infants if they suspect the mother took drugs while pregnant. In 2005, Larimer County had an influx of methamphetamine ('meth') cases - 650 alleged victims, which may have had an affect on increased reporting of child abuse. In 2008, methamphetamine cases decreased, although it is still early to know whether this or some other factor was responsible for the decrease in reported child abuse cases.
What this chart shows: Substantiated Abuse & Average Number of Children in Larimer County-Licensed and State-Licensed Placements, FY 2004-FY 2008

Data Source: Larimer County Human Services - Children, Youth, & Family Division
What these data tell us:
Most abuse occurs in a child's home; however abuse can also occur in out-of-home placement. Out-of-home placements may be licensed by either Larimer County or the State. According to the Children, Youth & Family Division of Larimer County Human Services, the average number of children placed in state-licensed placements has been declining because of a county-wide push to place children with relatives, particularly if they live in Larimer County, since outcomes are normally better if they remain close enough for the parents to visit regularly. While the number of children in county-licensed placements remains significantly higher than the number of children in state-licensed placements, the incidence of substantiated abuse in 2008 was 2.6% for state-licensed placements compared to 1.5% for county-licensed placements. See Children in Out-of-Home Placement for more information on county- and state-licensed placements.Reports of Child Abuse by Gender of Victim, Larimer County
