Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Mortality - Charts
What this chart shows: Heart Disease Mortality Rate* (per 100,000) - Colorado & Larimer County, 1998-2007

Data Source: Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment-Colorado Health Information Dataset
What these data tell us:
In Colorado and Larimer County, heart disease mortality rates generally dropped during the period 1998 to 2007, and are significantly lower than the national heart disease mortality rate of 211.0 per 100,000 (National Vital Statistics Report, Deaths: Final Data 2006). Since 2004, Larimer County has continued to surpass the Healthy People 2010 heart disease mortality objective (166 deaths per 100,000 in population), and 2006 statistics show the most significant one-year drop in heart disease mortality rates to date. Colorado also met the Healthy People 2010 heart disease objective in three of the five years shown. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attribute the decline to prevention efforts and improvements in early detection, treatment, and care. What this chart shows: Stroke Mortality Rate* (per 100,000) - Colorado & Larimer County, 1998-2007

*Age-Adjusted Rate
Data Source: Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment-Colorado Health Information Dataset
What these data tell us:
In Colorado, stroke mortality rates declined 16% from 2002 to 2007, and Larimer County surpassed the Healthy People 2010 stroke mortality objective (48 deaths per 100,000 in population) for four consecutive years (2003 to 2006). Across Colorado as a whole, the stroke mortality rate has generally decreased, but Larimer County's rates have fluctuated more widely. With smaller population sizes, caution should be used in ascribing causes to such fluctuations. The cluster of higher rates in Larimer County from 2000 through 2002 represented between 25 and 33 more deaths. Larimer County's stroke mortality rate has been slightly higher than the state's average since 2004. Both Larimer County and Colorado's stroke mortality rates for 2006 are lower than the national average of 45.8 (National Vital Statistics Report, Deaths: Final Data 2006). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attribute the national decrease in stroke mortality rates to prevention efforts and improvements in early detection, treatment, and care.Definition:
Ischemic Stroke: An ischemic stroke is the sudden and permanent death of brain cells that occurs when the flow of blood to a part of the brain is blocked and oxygen cannot be delivered to the brain. Depending on the part of the brain that is affected, strokes can result in weakness or paralysis of the arms, legs, and/or facial muscles, loss of vision or speech, and difficulty walking.
