Date posted: 01/13/2009

This measure represents the coverage of law enforcement agencies serving Larimer County. Each police department and the Sheriff's Department reported the number of square miles of jurisdiction and the number of law enforcement personnel per 1000 residents they serve. The personnel counted in these data are sworn officers, not civilian personnel.

What these data tell us:

The area of coverage for each department varies a great deal, from 6.0 square miles for the Estes Park Police Department, to 2640 square miles for the Larimer County Sheriff's Department. It is important to note that although the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Fort Collins Police Department and Colorado State University have their own jurisdictions, they sometimes work together to cover emergencies and other law enforcement needs.

What these data tell us:

In 2007, Estes Park had the highest ratio of law enforcement officers to residents. Within Larimer County, Estes Park Police Department's ratio (3.08 per 1,000 population) was most similar to the Colorado average (2.37 per 1,000 population). The Larimer County Sheriff's Office ratio appears artificially low because the total county population was used in calculating the ratio even though the Sheriff's Office only has jurisdiction in the unincorporated areas of the County. The remaining county law enforcement agencies had comparable officer/resident ratios, averaging about 1.28 law enforcement officers per 1,000 residents.

What these data tell us:

From 2000 to 2007, the ratio of Fort Collins police officers to population remained relatively steady. During this same period, the ratio of Loveland police officers to population peaked in 2002 and has shown slightly more fluctuation than Fort Collins.
