The United States Energy Information Administration defines vehicle miles traveled as the number of miles that residential vehicles are driven in a specified length of time, generally a day or a year.
The North Front Range Metropolitan Planning Organization released a 2001 Travel Survey that reported on the transportation trends of residential drivers in the Northern Front Range. A total of 1,958 of the 2,350 randomly selected households that were recruited completed the survey, for an 83% response rate. The sample included household members ages 16 and older. The data collected measured one day of travel for survey respondents.

What these data tell us:
According to the 2001 National Household Travel Survey [pdf], vehicles traveled an average of 40 miles nationally on a daily basis. All three areas presented on this page - Fort Collins, Loveland, and the Northern Front Range, were below this amount in an average range of 27 to 35 daily vehicle miles traveled. Overall, there were similar distributions among the percentages of vehicle miles traveled by each area; however on average, vehicles in Fort Collins traveled the least amount of daily miles (see data table). This could be related in part to commute destinations for Fort Collins versus Loveland. In Fort Collins, 82.9% of residents work in Fort Collins, compared to 55.1% in Loveland. The remaining Ft. Collins residents commute outside of the city (Work Commute page).Additional Information:
