The United States Census defines a civilian veteran as 'someone 18 and older who is not currently on active duty, but who once served on active duty in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, or who served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.' People who served for a short period of time are included in this definition.

What these data tell us:
From 2000 to 2008, the number of civilian veterans in the United States, Colorado, and Larimer County has steadily declined from an average of nearly 12.9% of the adult population in 2000, to 10.5% of the adult population in 2008. It is estimated that, in 2008, there was a greater proportion of veterans living in Colorado than in Larimer County or the United States.What this chart shows: Larimer County Veterans by Community

What these data tell us:
The percentage of veterans in each Larimer County community was somewhat varied in 2000. The community with the lowest percentage of veterans in the total adult population was Fort Collins at 9.9%. Livermore had the highest percentage of veterans in Larimer County with18.3% of the adult population, followed by Estes Park with 13.9% of the adult population. The average percentage of veterans in Larimer County and its communities was 13.9% of the adult population.What this chart shows: Veterans by Period of Service

What these data tell us:
In 2000, the largest percentage of veterans, 62%, served during World War II, Korean War, and/or the Vietnam era. Of the 62%, half served during the Vietnam era (1964 - 1975) only.The periods of service reported include non-war periods as well as service in times of war. The following are the dates of wartime service (from 1939 to 2000) indicated on this chart:
- World War II (September 1940-July 1947)
- Korean War (June 1950 - January 1955)
- Vietnam War era (August 1964 - April 1975)
- The 'August 1990 - 2000' category includes service in the Persian Gulf War.
