What these data tell us:

New cases of ovarian cancer have generally declined in Colorado, but have fluctuated more widely in Larimer County due to the small number of diagnoses. See the data table for the number of ovarian, uterine, and cervical cases diagnosed during this same period.

Ovarian Cancer Mortality Rate - Colorado & Larimer County, 1998-2007

What these data tell us:

Because of the low numbers of deaths due to cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancers, the Larimer County rates fluctuate quite a bit from year to year. The Colorado rate for ovarian cancer is more stable, showing an average mortality crude rate of 9.0 per 100,000. See the United States Department of Health and Human Services site for national rates.

*Age adjustment is used to compare risks of two or more populations at one point in time or one population at two or more points in time. Age-adjusted rates are computed by the direct method by applying age-specific rates in a population of interest to a standardized age distribution, in order to eliminate differences in observed rates that result from age differences in population composition. Age-adjusted rates should be viewed as relative indexes rather than actual measures of risk. Details of the calculation are available from The National Center for Health Statistics.
