Campaign Sign Guidelines

Photo of a campaign sign Following are general regulatory guidelines for the posting of campaign signs. Please be informed there may be other guidelines depending on the municipality or location of the signs. For a complete listing of Larimer County guidelines, please refer to the Larimer County Land Use Code, Section 10. For a complete listing of City of Fort Collins guidelines, please refer to the Fort Collins Land Use Code, Article 3.8.7.
  • Campaign signs are not allowed on a parcel or lot prior to forty-five (45) days before election day and must be removed within four (4) days after election day.
  • Campaign signs in residential zones must not exceed eight square feet face area, and must be unlighted.
  • Campaign signs in business, commercial, and industrial zones must not exceed thirty-two square feet face area.
  • There must be no more than one sign for each candidate or election issue on any parcel or lot.
  • Campaign signs must not be placed within any public right-of-way or attached to any pole, post, trees, wire, or other fixture within a public right-of-way.
  • Campaign signs must not be placed in locations that impair traffic visibility, or create a traffic hazard, or are detrimental to public safety.

In addition, destroying, damaging, defacing, tampering with, or theft of campaign signs are misdemeanors punishable by a fine of not more than seven hundred fifty dollars (Colorado Revised Statutes 1-13-113).
