The Larimer County Health Department was established in 1968 by the Larimer County Board of Commissioners, which in 2008 reaffirmed the department as the official public health agency for Larimer County when state public health statutes were updated.. Public health services are designed to promote health and reduce preventable diseases, injuries, disability and death. These services are organized into divisions that focus on community health; environmental health, and administrative services, including vital statistics. Crosscutting efforts include public health information and health advocacy, communicable disease control, and emergency preparedness.
The department is governed by a five-member Board of Health made up of Larimer County citizens who are appointed by the Board of Commissioners and serve staggered five-year terms. The Board of Health establishes the policies under which the Department is administered. The Public Health Director heads the department and is appointed by the Board of Health and serves at its pleasure. Funds to provide public health services are derived from County, State and Federal sources, private grants, donations, and fees for services.
State statutes define the roles and authorities of the Commissioners, the Board of Health the Public Health Director, and the Department in protecting the public's health. In addition, many of the statutory responsibilities of the State Health Department are delegated to the County Health Department.
