The presence of West Nile virus was confirmed in a mosquito sample taken from a trap in Fort Collins on June 5. This is the first positive sample in Larimer County and in Colorado for 2009. Though earlier than most years, this confirms that mosquitoes in Larimer County could be carrying West Nile virus now. It's time to take precautions against being bit.

Please Be Aware!!

  • As of June 11, 2009, West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes are already present in Larimer County.
  • West Nile virus will return to Colorado every spring.
  • For the past 5 years mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus have been present in Larimer County.
  • Mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus from June until the first frost.
  • Until the first frost, it continues to be important to protect yourself from mosquito bites when you are outdoors.

Bird Information

Certain birds (corvids) often die if they are infected with West Nile virus.

Dead birds are an early sign that West Nile virus is circulating in Larimer County.

Larimer County and the State Department of Public Health and Environment no longer test Corvids for WNV.
