Maintains the security of Larimer County Detention Center while
preserving order to ensure the safety and welfare of staff, visitors, and
inmates.
ROTATING SHIFTWORK REQUIRED
Successful applicants will
be required to complete all of the following prior to hire:

Written examination

Integrity and oral board
interview
·
Polygraph examination
·
In-depth background
investigation, including criminal and credit history
·
Psychological assessment and
medical exam, including drug test
·
Must be 21 years of age and be
legally authorized to work in the United
States

Must have current First Aid and
community CPR certificates by date of hire

Physical assessment test based
on the essential job functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
·
Effectively
and coherently use Interpersonal Communication skills to communicate with
inmates, professional visitors, and the public by providing information and
directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
·
Serve as
supervisor for inmate population. Set clear expectations with inmates, use
positive reinforcement techniques with inmates, hold inmates accountable for
their behavior, and treat inmates with respect, consideration, fairness, and
justice. Manage the inmate population by walking around the housing units and
talking to inmates. Plan and supervise unit activities. Serve as role model
for inmate population and encourage inmates to take responsibility for
themselves.
·
Effectively
restrain inmates, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints.
Subdue resisting inmates by using maneuvers and/or resorting to the use of
hands and feet and other approved devices in self defense.
·
Recognize
contraband items and, through frequent searches of housing units, cells, and
inmates, ensure that inmates do not possess such items.
·
Physically
break up fights and skirmishes.
·
Pursue
fleeing inmates both within and outside the confines of the detention facility
as required.
·
Perform
rescue operations.
·
Use radio,
intercom, and telephone communications systems to communicate effectively and
coherently with LCSO personnel and inmates and use other office communications
systems as necessary.
·
Demonstrate
competent communication skills in court and other formal settings.
·
Conduct
visual and audio surveillance of inmates for extended periods of time.
·
Engage in
activities in confined areas. Walk extensively on foot patrol and physically
check doors, windows, and other areas to ensure they are secure.
·
Read and
comprehend legal and non-legal documents including the processing of such
documents as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons, and other legal
writs and court documents.
·
Prepare a
variety of reports using appropriate grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Process reports as appropriate (i.e., file, alphabetize, label, etc.) Prepare
investigative reports using sketches, symbols, and mathematical computations.
·
Enter data into computer systems
or databases; lookup information in database; create basic word processor
documents and enter data into spreadsheets; use email to communicate.
·
Perform
crisis intervention functions to include inmate counseling, suicide prevention,
recognizing abnormal behavior, and implementing appropriate intervention
action.
·
Exercise
independent judgment in determining appropriate classification of inmates and
assessing and responding to the needs of special populations.
·
Perform
searches of people, mail items, and objects capable of concealing contraband,
buildings, vehicles, and large outdoor areas.
·
Process and
release inmates including taking their photographs and obtaining a serviceable
set of fingerprint impressions.
·
Inspect
unclothed inmates and may be exposed to body fluids and wastes and diseased
persons.
·
Endure
verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of
inmates and other people encountered in an antagonistic environment.
·
Detect the
presence of conditions such as smoke, unusual or excessive noise, odors, etc.
·
Put on and
operate a self-contained breathing apparatus and extinguish small fires by
using a fire extinguisher or other appropriate means.
·
Perform
rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters including
administering basic emergency medical aid; lifting, dragging, and carrying
people away from dangerous situations; and securing and evacuating people from
confined areas.
·
Detect and
collect evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses or
administrative violations.
·
Gather
information in inmate criminal or administrative investigations by interviewing
and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, confidential
informers, and staff and exercise independent judgment by determining when
probable cause exists to recommend disciplinary action.
·
Communicate
effectively in writing, orally, and via various forms of electronic media.
·
Use office
automation systems including basic proficiency with computer applications such
as e-mail, word processor, spreadsheet, and database lookup and/or entry.

Training:
·
Equivalent to the completion of
the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in Administration of
Justice, Police Science, Public or Business Administration, or a related
field. An Associate’s Degree is preferred.
Licenses/Certificates:
·
Possession
of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Colorado Driver's License.
·
Possession
of current standard First Aid and community CPR certificates.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL
REQUIREMENTS:
·
Must have
acceptable eyesight to perform Detention Deputy duties.
·
Must be able
to run from dark into light or light into dark.
·
Must have
appropriate voice skills to be clearly understood on the telephone, radio, and
in public contacts.
·
Must have
acceptable hearing to hear well on the telephone, radio, and in public
contacts.
·
Must be able
to sit, stand, or walk frequently. Must be able to walk up and down stairs.
·
Must be able
to run for short or long distances, change directions quickly while running,
and run up and down stairs.
·
Must be able
to get into and out of chair repeatedly.
·
Must be able
to stoop, bend, stretch, twist, reach, kneel, crawl, squat, climb, and balance.
·
Must be able
to lift, carry, drag, or push up to 100 pounds, both alone and with help.
·
Must be able
to jump or leap over small obstacles.
·
Must be able
to push or pull to manually open or shut heavy doors and/or force doors open.
·
Must be able
to climb ladders or stairs or climb up to and down from higher levels using
unconventional methods.
·
Must be able
to climb through small openings or crawl or maneuver in small confined areas.
·
Must be able
to work in hazardous or dangerous work areas or situations.
·
Must be able
to engage in physically strenuous activities to perform Detention Deputy duties
including using physical techniques to control persons; push or shove person to
defend self; wrestle people to the ground or on the ground; break up fights
between people; operate extinguishers or other fire equipment; etc.

Must have
fine and gross motor skills; hand dexterity; use of fingers, hands, and arms;
and good grip strength to perform Detention Deputy duties, operate equipment,
etc.

May be
subjected to caustic, flammable, or other hazardous materials.

Must be
capable of working under stressful situations.

Must have
quick reactions.
·
Must be
capable of going from stationary to exertion in an instant.
·
Must have
cognitive skills and awareness of work accuracy.

to obtain and maintain first aid and community CPR certifications.
NOTE: Applicants who successfully
pass the testing and interviews will be placed on an eligibility list for
approximately one year.
