The 37th Annual Larimer County Farmers’ Market (LCFM) continues through October 27 at 200 West Oak Street in downtown Fort Collins with a special new feature. Right now the Market is offering matching coupons for individuals who qualify for SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly food stamps). SNAP recipients use their Colorado Quest card at the Farmers’ Market to withdraw an amount from their SNAP accounts and the market will match up to $10 in additional SNAP funds so the recipient will have 10 additional dollars to spend on fresh produce and qualifying products. The program, which began earlier this month, has so far matched $180 in SNAP coupons.
The matching funding is the result of two awards: the Colorado Farmers' Market Association awarded a grant of $800 to create this matching SNAP program and the LCFM was also given a sponsorship from Kaiser-Permanente for an additional $1000 grant for this program.
Larimer County CSU Extension Horticulture Agent Alison Stoven O’Connor, who coordinates the market with the help of Colorado Master Gardener volunteers, says the Market is very excited about this program, “It gives customers an opportunity to stretch food dollars further and have access to high-quality produce from local vendors. SNAP coupons can only be used on fresh produce, baked goods, meats, dairy products and plants and seeds grown for food.”
The matching SNAP coupon program is available until funds run out or the market season ends (October 27, 2012). The market only grants one $10 matching funds per customer per market day, but customers can redeem this each week. At the rate of $10 in matching coupons, with the two grants, they can give a total of 180 separate $10 matches.
The LCFM is located in the Larimer County Courthouse parking lot, 200 W. Oak Street, Fort Collins and is open each Saturday, 8am-noon through October 27. The website is www.larimercountyfarmersmarket.org
and there is a Facebook link as well.
